What is Google Business Profile and How Does It Work

Google Business Profile (GBP), formerly known as Google My Business, is a free tool provided by Google that allows businesses to manage how they appear in Google Search and Google Maps. For any business that serves local customers in Saudi Arabia, it is arguably the single most impactful digital marketing asset you can control, and it costs nothing to set up.

What Is Google Business Profile?

When someone searches for a business by name, or searches for a service in a specific location, Google often shows a business profile directly in the search results. This profile displays your business name, address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews, and other information, all without the user needing to visit your website.

This profile is your Google Business Profile. It powers your appearance in the local pack (the map results showing three businesses), your Maps listing, and the Knowledge Panel that appears on the right side of search results when someone searches your business name directly.

Why GBP Is Especially Powerful in Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, Google Maps is the dominant way people find local businesses. Whether someone is looking for a restaurant in Riyadh, a clinic in Jeddah, or a contractor in Dammam, their first step is often opening Google Maps. A well-optimized GBP directly controls whether your business appears in those results, and whether it appears above your competitors.

Additionally, GBP supports both Arabic and English content, which is essential for Saudi businesses serving a bilingual market.

How GBP Works

Google Business Profile operates through a series of linked systems:

Claiming and Verification

First, you claim your business on Google by searching for it at business.google.com. If a listing already exists (Google often auto-creates them), you claim it. If not, you create one. Google then verifies that you are the legitimate owner through a verification process, typically a postcard sent to your address, a phone call, or increasingly through video verification.

Profile Management

Once verified, you control all the information in your profile. You set your business name, address, phone number, website, hours, business category, description, and more. You can upload photos, post updates, respond to reviews, and answer customer questions. Learn how to do this properly in our Step-by-Step Guide to Optimizing Your Google Business Profile.

Ranking Algorithm

Google determines which businesses to show, and in what order, based on three factors: relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (proximity to the searcher), and prominence (how well-established your business appears online). A fully optimized GBP improves your relevance and prominence. See How Google Ranks Businesses on Maps for a full breakdown.

Key GBP Features

Business Information

Your core information, name, address, phone, website, hours, appears prominently in search results. Accuracy is critical. Wrong hours frustrate customers and signal to Google that your listing is unreliable.

Photos and Videos

Businesses with photos receive significantly more direction requests and website clicks than those without. Photos show potential customers what to expect and build trust before they ever contact you. We explore this in detail in How Photos Affect GBP Performance.

Reviews

Customer reviews appear directly on your GBP and are one of the strongest signals both for rankings and for customer decision-making. How you manage reviews, both collecting them and responding to them, significantly affects your local SEO performance. See How Customer Reviews Impact Local Rankings.

Posts

GBP allows you to publish posts, similar to social media updates, that appear in your profile. These are excellent for promoting offers, sharing news, and keeping your profile active and fresh. Read What to Post on Google Business Profile for ideas.

Insights

GBP provides data on how customers find and interact with your profile, how many people searched for you, how many clicked for directions, how many called. This data is invaluable for understanding what's working. See How Insights in GBP Improve Visibility.

Getting Started

If you don't have a GBP yet, visit business.google.com and create your listing today. Verification typically takes a few days to a week. Once verified, prioritize completing every section of your profile before anything else.

Your GBP is the foundation of local SEO. To understand how it fits into the broader local SEO picture, read our guide: How Local SEO Works for Small Businesses in Saudi Arabia.

What It Costs and What It Replaces

A Google Business Profile is free, which is precisely why it is under-used. Businesses assume that anything costing nothing cannot matter much, and spend on advertising while the asset that generates most of their local visibility sits half-completed.

For many Saudi small businesses the profile produces more enquiries than the website does. A customer searching for a service nearby sees the map result, the photos, the rating and the opening hours, and calls or taps directions without ever visiting a site. That journey never touches your homepage.

The only real cost is attention: adding photos monthly, publishing the occasional post, answering questions and responding to reviews. Businesses that treat that as a recurring task consistently outperform better-funded competitors who set the profile up once and left it.

Where Profiles Go Wrong

The most common failure is stuffing keywords into the business name. It is an explicit policy violation, it is easy for Google to detect, and it is one of the fastest routes to suspension. Use the name on your signage and licence, exactly as it appears.

The second is a wrong or overly broad primary category. The primary category does more to determine what you rank for than almost anything else on the profile, and businesses routinely pick something adjacent to what they actually do.

The third is silence. Unanswered reviews, unanswered questions, hours that were right two years ago. A profile that looks abandoned reads as an abandoned business to a customer and as a low-quality signal to Google.

A Monthly Routine That Holds Position

Add new photos each month, publish a post every couple of weeks, respond to every review within a few days, and check the questions section for anything a stranger has answered incorrectly on your behalf. Together this is under two hours a month.

Review your insights once a month: how people found you, what they did next, and how that compares to similar businesses. A sustained decline in any one metric tells you where to direct effort before it becomes a lost ranking.

Update hours before every occasion that changes them, especially Ramadan and Eid. A profile that sends a customer to a closed door costs more than the visit: the review it earns lasts for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?+
Yes, entirely. It is the most valuable free digital asset a Saudi business owns: it decides whether you appear in Maps, what customers see when they find you, and often whether they call you or a competitor.
What is the difference between the local pack and the Knowledge Panel?+
The local pack is the three-business map block in search results. The Knowledge Panel is the detail card on the right when someone searches your business by name. Both are powered by the same profile, which is why one well-maintained profile improves several surfaces at once.
How do I verify my profile in Saudi Arabia?+
Google verifies by postcard, phone, email or video depending on category and location. If a profile was created years ago by someone who has left the business, recovering access is worth the effort before any other work, because an unverified listing cannot be fully optimised.
How often should I update the profile?+
Treat it as monthly maintenance at minimum: new photos, a Post or two, replies to every review, and a check that hours and categories are still right. Special hours for Ramadan, Eid and national holidays matter more here than anywhere else.
Is a Google Business Profile really free?+
Yes, entirely. Creating, verifying and managing the profile costs nothing. The only investment is the time to keep it current, which is also the part most competitors neglect.
Do I need a website if I have a profile?+
A profile alone can generate enquiries, and for some businesses it produces more than the website does. But a site lets you rank for searches the profile cannot reach, explain services in depth and control the whole journey. The two work together rather than substituting for each other.
How long does verification take?+
Usually a few days to a week. Video verification tends to be fastest if you have your licence, a utility bill and clear signage ready to show. Postcard verification is slower.
Can I have more than one profile?+
Only for genuinely separate locations, each with its own address and staff. Creating multiple profiles for one location is a common cause of suspension.
What happens if my profile gets suspended?+
You submit a reinstatement request with documentation proving you operate from the listed address. It can take weeks, during which you are effectively invisible on Maps, so keeping your licence, utility bill and signage photos on hand is worth the small effort.
Should my profile be in Arabic or English?+
Set your primary name and description in the language most of your customers search in, which for most Saudi businesses is Arabic, and use the additional name field for the other. Reviews in both languages strengthen the profile.
