Optimizing your Google Business Profile is one of the highest-ROI activities in local marketing. A fully optimized GBP consistently outperforms a basic listing, attracting more clicks, more calls, and more direction requests. This guide walks through every step, with specific attention to the Saudi market.
Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Listing
Before you can optimize, you need to own your listing. Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it already exists (Google often auto-creates listings), claim it. If not, create a new one. Follow the verification process, in Saudi Arabia, verification by phone call or video verification is usually the fastest option.
Don't skip verification. An unverified listing gives you no control over the information Google displays about your business.
Step 2: Choose the Right Business Category
Your primary business category is the most important relevance signal in your GBP. Be specific. "Dental Clinic" ranks better for dental searches than "Healthcare." "Italian Restaurant" ranks better for Italian food searches than "Restaurant." You can add secondary categories to capture additional search intent. Read our detailed guide on How to Choose the Right Business Category on GBP.
Step 3: Complete Your Business Information
Fill in every available field:
- Business name (exactly as it appears legally, don't add keywords)
- Address in the correct Saudi format (Street, District, City, Postal Code)
- Phone number (preferably local Saudi number)
- Website URL
- Business hours, Sunday through Thursday for Saudi businesses, with special hours for Ramadan
- Service areas if you're a service-area business
Step 4: Write a Bilingual Business Description
GBP allows a 750-character business description. Write one in English and one in Arabic that naturally includes your key services, your location, and what makes your business different. Don't keyword-stuff, write for your customers. The description appears in your full GBP listing and helps both Google and users understand your business.
Step 5: Upload High-Quality Photos
Add at minimum: a logo, a cover photo, exterior photos, interior photos, team photos, and product or service photos. Businesses with more than 10 photos receive significantly more engagement than those with fewer. Keep adding new photos monthly. See How Photos Affect GBP Performance for more detail.
Step 6: Add Your Products and Services
Use the Products and Services features to list what you offer with descriptions and prices where applicable. This gives Google more data about your business and surfaces additional information in your profile for potential customers.
Step 7: Publish Your First GBP Post
GBP posts appear in your profile and signal to Google that your listing is actively maintained. Post at minimum twice a month. Good post topics include: current offers, new services, business updates, seasonal content (especially Ramadan and Saudi National Day content), and tips relevant to your customers. See What to Post on Google Business Profile for content ideas.
Step 8: Enable Messaging and Set Up Q&A
Enable the messaging feature so customers can contact you directly from your GBP. Monitor incoming messages and respond promptly, slow response times hurt your profile's performance score.
Also review the Q&A section. Anyone can ask and answer questions on your profile: including your competitors. Monitor this section and provide accurate answers to questions about your business.
Step 9: Start Collecting Reviews
From your GBP dashboard, get your review link and start sharing it with satisfied customers via WhatsApp. Respond to every review, positive and negative. See How Customer Reviews Impact Local Rankings for a full strategy.
Step 10: Monitor Your Insights
GBP Insights show you how many people saw your profile, how they found you, and what actions they took. Review this data monthly to understand what's working and adjust accordingly. See How Insights in GBP Improve Visibility for guidance on reading these metrics.

Step 6: Fill the Fields Everyone Skips
Most profiles stop at name, category and hours. The services, products and attributes sections stay empty, and each of those is a set of searches you have declined to appear for.
Write service entries in the words customers use rather than the formal industry term. The colloquial Arabic name for a service is frequently what people type; the textbook translation frequently is not.
Attributes answer practical questions before they become phone calls: parking, payment methods, appointment requirements, family sections. They take ten minutes and most competitors have ignored them.
Step 7: Build the Review Routine
Decide who asks, at what moment, and in what words, then write it down. Requests that depend on someone remembering do not survive a busy week, which is why most review efforts fade by the second month.
Attach it to something that already happens: the completion message, the invoice, the handover. A short personal WhatsApp message from the owner converts far better than any automated system.
Reply to everything, including the positive ones. Replies take seconds and are read closely by every prospective customer scrolling past.
Step 8: Set the Exceptions Before You Need Them
Standard hours are usually right; special hours are usually missing. Ramadan alone restructures the trading day for most Saudi businesses, and a profile showing normal hours sends customers to a closed door.
Set Ramadan, Eid, National Day and any planned closures in advance. It takes minutes and prevents the specific poor review that describes an experience you never gave.
Diary a reminder for the month before Ramadan each year. It is the single most commonly forgotten maintenance task on Saudi profiles.
Step 9: Make It Someone’s Job
Every profile that stays competitive has a person responsible for it. Every profile that decays was assumed to be someone's responsibility without ever being assigned.
The monthly task list is short: photographs, one or two posts, review replies, hours check, questions check. Under two hours, and it holds positions that took months to earn.
Put it in a calendar with a name against it. That single administrative step separates the profiles that keep working from the ones that quietly slip over a year.
Step 10: Check What Customers Actually See
Owners view their profile through the management dashboard, which looks nothing like the customer's view. Search your own service from a phone, in your district, logged out, and read the listing as a stranger would.
Check the three things a customer decides on: whether the photographs make the place look worth visiting, whether the reviews are recent, and whether the hours are believable. Everything else is secondary to those.
Do this monthly. It catches stale photographs, wrong hours and unanswered questions faster than any report, because you are seeing exactly what the customer sees.
Common Setup Errors Worth Checking Now
Two profiles for one location, usually created years apart by different people, split reviews and put both at risk. Search your address before assuming you have only one.
A phone number that redirects, or a second number added for a campaign and never removed, quietly breaks consistency across every other listing that copied it.
And an address missing its floor or suite number counts as a different address to every system that reads it, which weakens the confirmation your other work depends on.
